One of the very first custom maps I ever played for quake was negeke's Ascending & Descending based on the Escher lithograph by the same name. That was a fantastic little map filled with puzzles and opened my eyes to the potential of quake mapping. Eleven years later, another map inspired by an Escher print comes out and blows it out of the water, demonstrating just how much things have progressed in the last decade.
The Trickster's Domain by pLaw is a really fabulous fusion of aesthetics, puzzles and combat design. Visually striking with a handful of unique models and textures. I love the giant stone noh-like masks on the walls and the suspiciously goatse-esque grenade targets.
The progression path is suitably unusual with a decent use of the honey style weapons as keys mechanic to gate progression and open paths between the zones. The secrets are cryptic and inventive, but not impossible to uncover as an attentive player. It's just really great, please play it.
