RAGE COMPILATION: Snake Rattle 'n' Roll (NES) - Final Boss and Ending - Whang!
Snake Rattle 'n' Roll for NES is somewhat of an underrated, forgotten classic. It is also possibly one of the most difficult games for NES.. Especially the last boss battle with Ice Foot, during which I almost threw my whole computer out the window. How was this game intended for children?
Ice Foot is a version of the other Big Foot enemies that you fight throughout Snake Rattle 'n' Roll, but he's a little extra difficult. In order to beat this boss battle, you have to not only do a large amount of damage to Ice Foot, you also have to do it without allowing it a chance to speed back up and heal. If you allow this frozen Big Foot to escape, he will immediately regain all of his health.
In this boss battle, you also have to avoid having your snake crushed by falling meteors. Although they have a predictable pattern, always falling in the same spot, they fall right in the middle of Ice Foot's path. This makes it very easy to either get crushed, or to allow the boss to escape and recover while you avoid dying.
Speaking of dying, there are no balls that allow you to grow your snake's tail on this stage, meaning that your snake can only be hit twice before dying. That shouldn't matter too much, though, since both the meteors and the Big Foot boss can crush you, killing you in a single hit.
NES games like Snake Rattle 'n' Roll were notorious for being super hard, to the extent that you can use the term "Nintendo hard" and people completely get what you're saying. This game, and particularly the last boss battle, push that concept far beyond its usual limits.
I imagine, though, that it'd be easier if you have two players using both Rattle and Roll. Or maybe then you'd have to deal with the frustration of getting in each other's way. It's already a very hectic boss battle.
Also, as it turns out, that little pyramid thing at the ending of the game is all of the levels, which combine into one massive mountain: https://i.imgur.com/hHRqT.png
It's a pretty cool touch that gets overlooked because the game gives you so little info to work with. Also, I don't imagine that many people have beaten Snake Rattle 'n' Roll.
It's actually pretty funny how minimal the ending of the game is, considering how difficult it is. However, that seems pretty par for the course with NES games. Ultra difficult titles with little to no reward. I guess the journey is the reward, though.
Anyway, as far as NES games go, Snake Rattle 'n' Roll is probably one of the more difficult ones out there, and after you're done laughing at my frustration, get ready to see the full playthrough video, which will be going up later this week.
