Moving on to the spinoff games associated with the Raiden shooter franchise, the first game in the spinoff series is the 1996 game Raiden Fighters, developed by Seibu Kaihatsu for the Arcade.

Although there are familiar elements tied to the Raiden games, like the single player or two player co-op mode and the return of the Raiden MK II and Beta fighters, Raiden Fighters introduces some new elements.

Raiden Fighters expands on the playable ship roster, by introducing five new (plus two unlockable ) fighters available for players to select from. These include Aegis, Beast Wing, Chaser, Devastator and the Endeavour class fighters. Each fighter has there own unique attack powers and ship stats.

Stage structure has also undergone major changes. These are now referred to as Missions. In total, there are 3 primary missions, each broken into three areas, with the third area a frantic and tense encounter against a massive boss enemy. The final mission is against the enemy's base of operations.

Speaking of antagonist, the traditional enemy of the Raiden games series, the Cranassians, are gone and in their place is an enemy referred to only as The Dictator who is planning to conquer the world with his army of advanced WMD's. Enter the Raiden Fighters to stop the Dictator's ambitions. Apparently the setting for Raiden Fighters is somewhere in Central and South East Asia, based on mission briefing images that are displayed prior to every mission.

Fun Fact: The games original title was supposed to have been Gun Dogs, however, this title was not received well, So, by putting Raiden in the title generated more appeal among shmup fans. Also, one of the selectable fighters has the initials "G.D" engraved on it, making reference to that. Very clever.

Here, I do a full playthrough with the Raiden MKII class fighter on Normal mode.
