Raiden III Game Sample - Playstation 2
Original Air Date: December 8th, 2009
This game isn't as wholesome as the original Raiden, Raiden II or Raiden DX, but it's a decent old-school shooter in its own right I suppose. I don't like how the bombs don't tear up the land and I hate how the enemy bullets easily blend in with explosions, sometimes disappearing completely from view and causing some pretty cheap deaths. The game is also a poor evolution of the series IMO, having only three weapons (two comparable to the other Raidens I believe) and one new missile (Radar Missiles). The nicely detailed 2D maps have been traded in for relatively bland 3D landscapes as well.
Fortunately, the game is still co-op, has a few unlockables, a good soundtrack, provides a nice challenge (especially with Double Play Mode), and the controls are good, though the ship seems to move a bit on the slow side. Considering Moss adapted it from the Seibu Kaihatsu classic from over a decade ago and it's the first game with "3D elements" (excluding anything elementary like "The Raiden Project" opening), it could have been a lot worse.
For those curious, the difficulty is set to "Arcade". The video shows level one and some of level two.
