Ubisoft wrote on their blog that they invited actual special ops soldiers to play their upcoming title, Rainbox Six Siege, in order to verify that the game actually reflects how soldiers manage hostage situations. The soldiers were a part of the GIGN, which is a division of French Armed forces that specialises in hostage rescues specially. Regarding their visit, Ubisoft said:

“We get to ask them a lot of questions and get great feedback. Interestingly enough, they told us that if given a choice to protect a teammate or a civilian, the GIGN operator would protect the civilian. That's some serious dedication to preserving life and we wanted to emulate that kind of passionate commitment in the game.”

The game’s Hostage Rescue mode involves one team with a hostage, defending their position, and another who are tasked with finding them and extracting the hostage within a set time-frame – Or just killing them all, because that’s way more fun than saving hostages.

The hostages can actually die, though, meaning players are supposed to approach situations cautiously, which is where the GIGN’s advice might have been most valuable. Either way, the mode sounds awesome to me, and the obvious effort put into it just makes it even more exciting. –All aboard the hype train, choo, choo, motherlickers.-
