Introduction
In this chapter the basic application of the concept involved in comparisons of two or more quantities and changes in their values has been discussed by using ratio and proportion concept. For examples comparison of the ages, weights, income, saving, heights etc. This concept is very useful in solving the many arithmatic problems.
In mathematics, a ratio is a comparison between two quantities indicating that one quantity is how many times the other quantity. Proportion is a term that shows the equality of two ratios.

Ratio of the two quantities is defined as the number of times one quantity is contained in another quantity.
For example Ram has 5 coins and Shyam has 3 coins. It means that the ratio of number of coins between Ram and Shyam is '5 is to 3' i.e, 5:3. It should be noted that in a ratio, the order of the terms is very important. Here the ratio is 5:3 while 3:5 is wrong.
The next point to be considered is the comparision of two quantities is meaningless if they are not of same kind or not in same units. We can not compare 8 men and 6 cows because they are not of same kind. We can not compare 6 ruppee with 10 paisa, but we can compare 600 paisa with 10 paisa. So to find the ratio of two quantities, it is necessary to express them in same units.
The ratio of two quantities x and y is denoted by x : y or x/y or . The numerator (x) of the ratio is called the antecedent and denominator (y) is called the consequent of the ratio.
Important properties of ratio
1. Ratio has no units, but to find the ratio quantities must be in same unit.
2. The ratio of two quantities is equivalent to the fraction that one quantity is of the other. So, Ratio is an abstract number like fraction.
3. The value of a ratio does not change when the numerator and denominator both are multiplied by same quantities, e.g, 3:4 = 6:8 = 9:12.
4. The value of a ratio does not change when the numerator and denominator both are divided by same quantities.e.g,72:48 = 36:24 = 18:12.
5. The ratio of two fractions can be expressed in the ratio of integers, e.g, 3/4:5/4 = 3:5
Compound ratio
When two or more than two ratios are multiplied with each other, then it is called a compound ratio.
For example, the compound ratio formed by the four ratios 4:3, 1:2, 3:5 and 2:3 is given by 4×1×3×2 : 3×2×5×3.
Duplicate ratio
When a ratio is compounded with itself twice, then it results in a duplicate ratio i.e x2 : y2 is called duplicate ratio of x : y.
For example, 4:9 is the duplicate ratio of 2:3.
Triplicate ratio
When a ratio is compounded with itself thrice, then it results in a triplicate ratio i.e x3 : y3 is the triplicate ratio of x : y.
For example, 27:125 is the triplicate ratio of 3:5.
