Average is one of the most important mathematical concepts that we use in our day to day life. It is a very simple but effective way of representing an entire group by a single value. In mathematics, average is treated as the arithmetic mean of a group of quantities.
Q1. The average age of students of a class is 15.8 years. The average age of boys in the class is 16.4 years and that of the girls is 15.4 years. Find the ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls in the class.
Solution: Let x and y be the number of boys and girls respectively.
So, age sum = 15.8(x + y) = 16.4x + 15.4y
0.6x = 0.4y x/y = 2/3 Required ratio = 2:3
Q2. The average monthly income of a family of four earning members was Rs 15,130. One of the daughters in the family got married and left home, so the average monthly income of the family came down to Rs 14,660. What is the monthly income of the married daughter?
Solution: Monthly income of married daughter
= 15130 × 4 –14660 × 3 = 60520 – 43980 = 16540
Q3. The average weight of three men A, B and C is 84 kg. D joins them and the average weight of the four becomes 80 kg. If E whose weight is 3 kg more than that of D, replaces A, the average weight of B, C, D and E becomes 79 kg. What will be the weight of A?
Solution: Weight of D = 80 × 4 – 84 × 3 = 68
Weight of E = 71
Weight of B + C + D + E = 79 ×4 = 316
(Weight of B + C) + 68 + 71 = 316 B + C = 177
So, Weight of A = 84 × 3 – 177 = 252 –177 = 75
Q4. In Arun’s opinion, his weight is greater than 65 kg but less than 72 kg. His brother thinks that Arun’s weight is greater than 60 kg but less than 70 kg. His mother’s view is that his weight cannot be greater than 68 kg. If all are them are correct in their estimation, what is the average of different probable weights of Arun?
Solution: Possibilities (Arun) = {66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71}
Possibilities (Arun + Brother) = {66, 67, 68, 69}
Possibilities (All) = {66, 67, 68}
Average = (66 + 67 + 68) / 3 = 67
