Rayman 2: The Great Escape (N64)--Single-Segment Speed Run--2:06:32
There have been some pretty big discoveries in Rayman 2 lately (mostly by Unreal). The new tricks along with CloakedYoshi beating my 2:11:42 yesterday made me decide to do another any% run and see what kind of time I could get.
This run is by no means optimized. I made some ugly mistakes, didn't use some tricks that should be used, and improvised a few parts of the lum route. However, the run still demonstrates a lot of good strategies. Here are some brief comments on each level:
Escape: Good.
Woods of Light: I missed the Murfy text skip, but everything else was fine.
Fairy Glade: I messed up the first sliding section and missed the first cycle on the moving platforms as a result. I lost a little time on the climbing section with the barrels; I'm not sure what happened there. The rest of the level was good.
Marshes of Awakening: Good.
Bayou: Rayman doesn't auto-aim at the first switch in the level, so you have to aim at it manually. I missed, died, and lost 10 seconds. The rest of the level was fine.
Sanctuary of Water and Ice: I haven't practiced the door clip in ages, so I decided not to use it. It should really be used, though. Other than that, the level went well.
Menhir Hills 1: Good
Cave of Bad Dreams: The mini-guardian section could have gone better. In the second orange orb area, I skipped a lum in an attempt to reach the moving platform on the first cycle, but I didn't make it. I screwed up the last section of the boss fight and probably lost 10 seconds or so. The rest of the level was good.
Menhir Hills 2: The purple lum room was embarrassingly bad. I lost about 15 seconds there. In the room with the last walking shell, I tried to get some extra lums, but messed up and decided to just move on.
Canopy: I completely botched the mast trick, losing over 20 seconds. Everything else was fine.
Whale Bay: I fell off the mast at the end, losing about 12 seconds. The masts in the game just didn't like me in this run. The rest of the level was good.
Sanctuary of Stone and Fire: I started turning things around here. The miniboss skip went well. The new orb skip (found by Unreal) wasn't very fast, but it was okay. Everything else was good.
Echoing Caves: I wasn't sure how many lums I would need, so I got some lums near the beginning. The door clip went well. I had some trouble after the first flying section, but everything else was good.
Precipice: Good.
Top of the World: I'm used to fighting the second barrel guy differently in 100%, so I started doing that strategy, then realized my mistake and tried to do something else, which ended with me being hit. This cost some time and put the third barrel guy in a weird position, which cost even more time.
Sanctuary of Rock and Lava: I had to pause once because I can only fit two hours on a DVD. Then I had to pause again due to an interruption. The level went pretty well except for the spinning platform room, where I screwed up a couple times.
Beneath the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava: Good. I wasn't sure how many lums I had near the end, so I paused to check.
Tomb of the Ancients: At one point, I tried a new trick where you press L to cancel the respawn animation after dying, but I brought up the lore screen when I did. I still saved time, though. I lost 7 seconds due to a very stupid death in the three-platform room, but other than that, things went well, including the new method to skip raising the second platform (found by Unreal).
Iron Mountains: Good. There are lots of places where you can mess up here, but I played it safe and got through cleanly.
Prison Ship: Great. I almost ate it at the end of the sliding section, but I recovered.
Crow's Nest: The first form can be done a little faster, but this was fine.
------------------------------------
For the time being, I'll try to focus on 100%. Once I'm done with that, I might go back and improve this run.
Thanks to Unreal, CloakedYoshi, and everyone else who has worked on the game. At one point, I thought the time would never go below 2:15, but here it is below 2:07. Sub-2:05 is well within reach, and I'd say even sub-2:04 is possible without any new strategies. Maybe we'll even see sub-2 some day!
