what is the difference between GOLD and alternative edition?

Answer-
Both GOLD and alternative edition of RE5 has the same content. GOLD is available for both PS3 and Xbox 360. Alternative edition is only for PS3 version that too for Japan and select regions only. Also, both editions has different cover arts and disc arts.

**# About Xbox 360 version of Resident Evil 5: GOLD Edition-

The Xbox 360 version don't has the DLCs on the disc itself. So, you recieve Codes for the DLCs in the game box.

You need Xbox Live to get DLCs. You could always take a HDD (if you have one) to a friend's house, make a XBL Silver account, and then download to your HDD by entering the codes on the Marketplace or Try on your free trial of Xbox-LIVE code that comes with some 360 games if you are not subscribed to Xbox-LIVE service.

all the extra content has to be downloaded from Xbox Live, so when you buy the gold edition it's essentially a repackaging of the original game with a code printed on the back of the manual. So what of those gamers wanting to try out the extra outfits and Mercs mode who aren't connected to Live? The game assumes that all the people buying are going to have an Internet connection and will be happy to download the extras. This really isn't fair, and although you can argue that digital distribution saves on producing a second disc for the package (bumping up the price a little), the whole process totally disregards an entire segment of gamers who probably wouldn't mind having access to the new stuff.

And no, you can't go to a friends house that has xbox live and do whatever.

**# About PS3 version of Resident Evil 5: GOLD Edition-

PS3 version has all the costumes, 2 episodes, mini-games on the Blu-Ray Disc on itself. You just need to complete the game once to unlock everything like this video shows (however, Versus and 2 costumes can be played from the start and Lost in Nightmares is unlocked after completing chapter 3-1)

**# About PC-

PC UPDATE (May 2020) -

When Resident Evil 5 was released on PC in 2009, there was no Desperate Escape for PC but now you can purchase Desperate Escape and Lost in Nightmares from Steam Game Store, but if you have the original physical PC version, I am not sure if it will work with it, maybe it needs the Steam version of Resident Evil 5. So, before buying Desperate Escape from Steam, you should ask in Steam forums if Desperate Escape will work with Resident Evil 5 game you have. Situation during 2009:-
PC only has normal Resident Evil 5 game version with extra costumes and 3D compatibility with some scenes via NVidia 3D engine and NVidia 3D glasses for PC. Unfortunately, PC version of Resident Evil 5 does not have the 2 extra episodes (LiN & DE) or the Mercs Reunion. Those episodes are only avalable on PS3 BD and Xbox 360 via free download from Xbox Market Place with GOLD edition codes or for a cost if you decide to purchase each of those DLCs seperately without buying GOLD edition.
