Ready Player One Was WRONG - First Gaming Easter Egg EVER (1973)
I've always asked why we use the term EASTER EGG in video games for finding stuff. It does have a ring to it, but then I was asking myself. What is the first easter egg in a video game ever? It turns out the movie Ready Player One was wrong. The first easter in gaming ever is a Mcdonalds in Atari's 1973 Moonlander AKA Lunar Lander. Mcdonalds was so little at the time they even misspelled the restaurant.
What is Moonlander ??
A genre of video games loosely based on the 1969 landing of the Apollo Lunar Module on the Moon. In Lunar Lander games, players control a spacecraft as it falls toward the surface of the Moon or other astronomical body, using thrusters to slow the ship's descent and control its horizontal motion to reach a safe landing area. Crashing into obstacles, hitting the surface at too high a velocity, or running out of fuel all result in failure. In some games in the genre, the ship's orientation must be adjusted as well as its horizontal and vertical velocities.
What is a Video Game Easter Egg ??
An Easter egg is a message, image, or feature hidden in software, a video game, a film, or another medium. The term used in this manner was coined around 1979 by Steve Wright, the then-Director of Software Development in the Atari Consumer Division, to describe a hidden message in the Atari video game Adventure, in reference to an Easter egg hunt.
