Located in the southern hemisphere, Australia's seasons are the exact opposite of those in the northern hemisphere.

Therefore, during the winter off-season in the northern hemisphere, manufacturer-affiliated racing teams travel to Australia in the middle of summer to conduct a variety of driving tests.

In particular, driving tests in Australia, where there is little time difference from Japan, are indispensable for testing tires for midsummer in winter and for electronic control matching on icy and snowy roads in summer.

In Australia, motorsports is very active, and is supported by the enthusiasm and maniacal popularity of the country, which is like a combination of North America and Europe.

For the past few years, it has become a standard practice to start the F1 season in Australia in March.

My first visit to Australia was in 1986.

I had signed a race driver contract with Mitsubishi Ralliart and was in Australia to conduct development tests in preparation for the All-Japan Group A race that opened in April.

Australia was also an important market and production base for Mitsubishi Motors.

At the time, Toyota and Nissan also had production plants in Australia, but Mitsubishi Motors had the largest share of the market.

The local race teams were eager to race Stallion Group A cars, and the development of these cars was carried out in cooperation with the Japanese side.

The first time I raced a Stallion Group A car was in 1985, the year before the first race at Fuji Speedway.

It was the first "Inter TEC Race" held at Fuji Speedway.

In addition to the Japanese RALLIART car I drove, there were three other cars entered in the race, one from the British team and one from the Australian team.

Many people probably do not know that former F1 pilot Ken Bartlett was on board the Australian team car.

The Bathurst 1000 km race is held once a year in Australia and attracts a great deal of media attention not only locally but also in Europe and the United States.

The Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales, is a mountainous circuit built in 1938 and is known as an impregnable course that is a combination of Germany's Nürburgring and North America's Laguna Seca, famous for the "Corkscrew.

In recent years, this course has been included in the sim game "Gran Turismo," and many people have probably attacked it.

I may be one of the few Japanese drivers who have driven both the actual course and the Gran Turismo course.

A course that is not easy to conquer, as it includes elements of a mountain pass.

The Mount Panorama course is a 6.213km course that runs from a flat terrain area with pits and paddock, up the hillside, around the top of the mountain at high speed, and down a long straight of about 2km.

The area around the pit area is a part-time circuit that is normally used as a public road.

There are two straight sections, the "Mountain Straight" (about 1.1 km) leading up to the mountain and the "Conrod Straight" (less than 2 km) running downhill, with the downhill section, the Conrod Straight, reaching a maximum speed of over 300 km/h even for touring cars.

In 1986, the first time the track was visited, there was no chicane, and the highest speed was recorded on the Conrod Straight. However, there are no guardrails on the sides of the track, and the run-off area, which is grassed and wide, is covered with standing trees, and six drivers have been killed in collisions in the past.

In 1992, Dennis Flum, who drove for McLaren F1, was killed in an accident on this conrod straight.

The surface condition of the entire course is not good, with ruts and undulations in the pavement, making it difficult to drive straight.

The mountainside is fast and the run-off area is narrow.

If you run off the course, you may crash into a wall or overturn and fall off a cliff.

There are many blind corners, and if a vehicle spins out ahead of you, it is difficult to avoid it.

However, the corner layout, which takes advantage of the natural terrain, is challenging, rhythmic, and narcotic.

Once you set foot on the track, the adrenaline never dies down until you conquer it.

In my first attempt at the Stallion in 1986, I qualified in the top 10 Hardee's Heroes, but retired from the final due to turbo trouble.

The following year, 1986, I started 23rd in qualifying.

In the final, he fought hard with BMW works M3s J. Cecotto and G. Brancatelli and E. Pirro and R. LaBaglia, but was able to hold them off and finish 5th overall.

Their lap time at the time was in the 2:28 range in the Stallion.

Now, when running in Gran Turismo with the Lancer Evo X Gr. 3, the lap time is in the 2 minutes and 9 seconds range.

In recent years, GT3 machines have recorded times in the 2 minute and 2 second range in actual qualifying.

The progress in machine performance has been tremendous.
