Realme's Dynamic Island Feature Enhancing User Experience as Original Improves
A deleted tweet from a company executive and a leaked animation suggest that Realme, a subbrand of Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo, may be the first Android OEM to copy Apple's Dynamic Island. It happens at a time when Apple appears to be showing that Dynamic Island is worth copying because the largely ornamental UI fixture is finally receiving some serious third-party support.
Not surprisingly, this is the case. As 9to5Google notes, Realme essentially told everyone back in September that it wanted to clone Dynamic Island. Since then, it seems that a function known as the "Mini Capsule" has been under development. Oppo's SuperVOOC charging logo is visible on a pill-shaped user interface element in a screenshot from the deleted tweet. The animation, shared by reliable leaker OnLeaks via Smartprix, shows the capsule expanding and collapsing to display charging status information. Since the release of the iPhone 14 Pro, Dynamic Island on Apple has served as something of a stand-in. It performs a few intriguing tasks, such as alerting you when the battery in your AirPods is running low. However, it has mainly been sitting back and waiting for developers of independent apps to make use of the iOS 16.1 Live Activities API. The list of supported apps was unimpressive when it went live in October, unless you're a fan of Carrot Weather.
As some well-known apps join the platform, that is finally changing. To enable you to see information like how many minutes until your ride without keeping the Uber app open, Uber is releasing an app update that makes use of Dynamic Island. Even as a sporadic rideshare user, I find that to be incredibly helpful. In the upcoming months, Google Maps will also add support for Live Activities, which might mean turn-by-turn directions in the Dynamic Island similar to how Apple Maps makes use of the function.
