3The game's narrative takes place in 1898, one year before the events of Red Dead Redemption 2. The player takes on the role of a silent protagonist who is arrested for murder and imprisoned in Sisika Penitentiary. Six months into their sentence and awaiting execution, they are assigned to a work detail. The prison transport is intercepted in transit by a group of well-armed men who free the prisoners. Their leader introduces himself as Horley and escorts the player to his employer, the widow Jessica LeClerc, who reveals that the player was unfairly accused of murdering her husband Philip, whom she suspects was actually killed by his business partners Jeremiah Shaw, Amos and Grace Lancing, and their outlaw accomplice Teddy Brown to gain control of his share of the business. Claiming to be the only one to know about the player's innocence, because she investigated the calibre of the bullets used to kill Philip and found they didn't match that of the player's gun, Jessica enlists their help in avenging Philip's death in exchange for proving their innocence and allows them to leave.
After the player is provided with a camp and some work to get back on their feet, they meet with Horley and his associate, Old Man Jones, in Blackwater, who suggest that they provide assistance to the sheriffs of Valentine, Tumbleweed, and Blackwater while Horley investigates Philip's murder. Upon doing so, the player meets with Horley and Jones again, who tell them to seek work with either US Marshal Tom Davies or outlaw Samson Finch, depending on the player's honour level. Davies enlists the help of the player and their posse in apprehending notorious bandit Alfredo Montez, whom he suggests that the player kill because he lacks the evidence to prosecute him. After an initial failed attempt to capture Montez, the player's posse eventually does so, earning Davies' respect. Otherwise, Finch, who has been planning a bank robbery and needs someone to carry it out, has the player's posse prove themselves by robbing a group of wealthy industrialists and killing his former partner and his garrison, who betrayed Finch to plan their own robbery.
After either series of events, the player's posse meets with Horley and Jessica to help kill Teddy Brown, who is hiding out with his gang at Fort Mercer. With the assistance of the local authorities and several Marshals, the player's posse besieges the fort and eliminates Brown's men, before capturing Brown himself, who is swiftly killed by Jessica after a fruitless interrogation about his co-conspirators in Philip's assassination. Following this, the player's posse either helps Davies protect Valentine from Montez's gang, who later capture and attempt to hang Davies as revenge for executing Montez; or assists Finch with his bank robbery, escaping with several hundreds of dollars worth of bearer bonds in the process.
Later, with Teddy Brown dead, Amos Lancing and Jeremiah Shaw try to finalize their takeover of Philip's business by coercing Jessica into signing a forged contract. Accompanied by Horley and the player's posse, Jessica meets the two men and their bodyguards in Blackwater, but the peaceful negotiations fail, as an enraged Jessica shoots Lancing dead, resulting in a shootout. Upon retrieving the contract from Shaw, the player's posse escorts Jessica and Horley out of Blackwater, whereupon the former vows to find and kill Grace Lancing one day, and laments over how her vendetta led to both her and Horley becoming fugitives. Thanking the player's posse for their assistance, Jessica tells them that their part in her revenge quest is over and leaves with Horley to go into hiding.
A Life of 'Shine
A Life of 'Shine is a story chapter added in December 2019. The player character is introduced to Maggie Fike, who once controlled the moonshining business in Lemoyne but disappeared after falling afoul of revenue agents led by the ruthless Reid Hixon. Maggie convinces the player to invest in her business and help her carry out her revenge against Hixon. The player frees Maggie's nephew Lem from the revenuers, attracting the attention of the Braithwaite family, who have turned to moonshine and recruited Maggie's former cook Danny-Lee to oversee production. After the player character sabotages the Braithwaites' operation, Maggie has Lem arrange a meeting with them and anonymously inform Hixon. At the meeting, the player kills Hixon's agents and the Braithwaites' men before executing Hixon and kidnapping Danny-Lee. They bring him to Maggie, who allows him to leave under the condition she never sees him again. The player then returns to producing moonshine with Maggie and Lem.
