Red Storm Gathering 13 | Getting the Drop on Yankee Sturgeon Sub

Vjuga-65 dropped the UGMT-1 almost directly on top of the Yankee Sturgeon... and sank it.

22-SEP-1984 2300L North of Murmansk
We just left Murmansk in our new Victor II. Our priority mission from GLAVCOM was to protect Andoya to stop any NATO subs from dropping off their SEAL teams, equivalent to our Naval Spetsnaz.
01:02 First Encounter
23-SEP-1984 1300L Just off Andoya
A NATO subsurface contact chased us. We tried going around it, but bumped into it anyway. But we managed to speed away from it and take position around Andoya.
01:40 Second Encounter
23-SEP-1984 2000L Just off Andoya
A subsurface contact came at us from the west-southwest. Turned out to be a Yankee Permit-class. We sank it, but had to expend a decoy to dodge the Mk 48 it launched.
04:20 Third Encounter
24-SEP-1984 2100L Just off Andoya
Another subsurface contact came at us. This turned out to be a Los Angeles-class. We sank it by expending both Vjuga and TEST-71M and had to get 2 hits on it to sink her. And that was indeed our target. GLAVCOM was please.
Our new mission was sink Diesel Electric subs leaving Trondheim to East of Norwegian Sea. We decided to head toward Trondheim.
09:30 Fourth Encounter
25-SEP-1984 1300L North of Trondheim
We intercepted a subsurface contact leaving Trondheim. This turned out to be an Oberon, which we sank. That turned out to be our target and GLAVCOM was pleased.
Our new mission was to intercept a convoy heading to Narvik attempting to reinforce it against our ground offensive.
13:50 Fifth Encounter
26-SEP-1984 0300L
We got into position, but several NATO subsurface contacts followed us. In an attempt to evade them we bumped into another to the west. This turned out to be an Oberon which we sank.
16:04 Sixth Encounter
27-SEP-1984 1100L West of Mo i Rana
We intercepted the convoy, we counted 4 Escorts (County, Perry, Belknap, Adams ) and 3 freighters. Later we found a Sturgeon hiding in their midst. After multiple salvos we managed to sink all 4 escorts, then we managed to sink the Sturgeon. But with only 2 torpedoes left, we now entered a long tailchase... Only to be surprised by a helo-dropped torpedo. Fortunately, we were able to evade the torpedo with maneuvers to run it out, then chased after the 3 freighters, sinking 1 and damaging another, which is good enough to finish the mission.
We reported the results to GLAVCOM, who informed us we had won Order of the Red Star, then handed us another order, despite my complaint that we are out of torpedoes.
New Order: Large Enemy Convoy heading for Portsmouth, UK. Intercept and destroy.
We of course ran for Murmansk as fast as we could, as multiple NATO assets rushed us and we barely got away.
31:20 Triumphant Return
28-SEP-1984 0100L Murmansk
We returned and the Port Admiral was there to congratulate us and handed me the medal personally. I told the crew to be back in 24 hours, as the reload will take at least that long.
And thus ended the 13th war patrol of Kapitan Changov. The adventure will continue in the next episode!

This will be my third attempt at the Soviet campaign. The year is 1984. After too many Yankee provocations, the Soviet Union had enough and declared war. The Soviet Army can take Europe, if the Soviet Navy can stop or at least slow the reinforcements reaching continental Europe from the US. And as a captain of a Soviet submarine, I will do my duty to the Motherland.
