G'day all MrPaladin here.

Todays ride is from a recent trip to Dauphin Island in Alabama USA. There had been several days of heavy rain so I was in for a surprise as I rode the island.

The strangest thing about the island is the general acceptance of the spelling on the name. A "Dauphin" is the eldest male heir to the French throne and the island was named after Louis XIV of France's great-grandson and heir, the dauphin, the future Louis XV of France. Yet all over the island People reference Dauphin simply as "Dolphin" and many of the Island arts and stores feature the sea mammal and not references to the French crown?!?!?

It’s known for stretches of white sand, like Public Beach. At the entrance to Mobile Bay, 19th-century Fort Gaines features original cannons and a blacksmith shop. Migrating birds can be seen in the forest, dunes and swamp of the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab's Estuarium offers aquariums and a living marsh boardwalk.
