I blindly trust sloclap after Sifu, but should you?
Rematch just launched a few days ago for those that bought the elite edition. We have binged about 10 hours and here is our review in progress
Rematch is the new game from Sifu developer sloclap that blends Mario Strikers, EA FC with a dash of Rocket League and although it has some launch issues and one big omission that ill get to at the end, overall it’s a football revelry, but before getting to the good stuff here’s a few quick answers.
Cross-play wont be active at launch, Rematch isn’t free, it’s not available on Nintendo Swtich 2 yet, but it will be available on Game Pass, there is a battle pass, but it’s all cosmetic and not in your face.
Rematch looks and plays fantastic. There are no fouls, offsides or subs, you control one player, matches are over before you know it and the short gameplay loop ensures you always want to play one more. Mechanically, it’s easy to learn but hard to master.
Surprisingly, after two betas, servers have performed quite poorly, which means that players and the ball are all over the place. Matchmaking can take longer than desired, especially at 5v5 and ranked, which are the two best ways to play, but that's attributed to smaller player pool pre launch.
However, the biggest omission is that there is no offline mode, which means there is no way to practice or get better without letting your team down. There is also no single player option, which is too bad because the prologue gave a taste of what it could be. Obvious competitors Rocket league and EA FC both feature multiple offline variants.
Rematch is an esoteric game for hardcore football fans who also like to play online games. The verdict isn’t final, but when performance is optimal and judging Rematch on what it is and not what it could be, Rematch has a great foundation and can hopefully build upon it.
