Remembrances of Games Past, Part #45 - Half-Life 2 (2004) (PC) (Valve)
Even more so than its Black Mesa-bound predecessor, Valve's heavily anticipated 2004 release serves as the foundation for all modern first-person shooters. Even so, the game doesn't really play, feel or look like any other FPS out there. The understated realism of the game's regular weapons is a far cry from Call of Duty's over-the-top arsenal and the only virtual places which radiate the same cold dullness as City 17 are the desolate wastelands of STALKER and Metro 2033. I didn't particularly like the rather unforgiving gunplay and austere atmosphere of Half-Life 2 when it originally came out (as I preferred the crowd-pleasing escapism of Doom-style shooters), but over time it's only become increasingly clear that HL2 was a very special game and remains so to this day.
