A full length Hercules style monochrome graphics card that a forum user sent to me had a weird issue: all the background attributes (like brightness, underlining etc) of the text characters were slightly offset. The Hercules cards store attributes in a separate 2K SRAM chip, distinct from the 64K DRAM used for graphics mode and ASCII characters. So either that chip or the logic chips attaching that SRAM to the rest of the card might have been at fault.
