Representing Latines and Hispanics In Games
This time we're going to talk about something important, but different to the usual GC Positive content. I'd like to talk to you all about the way Latine and Hispanic people are represented in video games and games media. It's not great. Whether it's by washing out our unique cultural identities, painting us as villains, or worse yet, using our struggles to satisfy a guilty conscience, Latine and Hispanic people are often mishandled in games. From the coded Borderlands 2 characters Salvador and Mordecai, to the stereotyped Mexicans of Red Dead Redemption, to the missed opportunity with Evil Within's Sebastian Castellanos and Gears of War's Dominic Santiago. I’d like to break down these faux-pas, explain why they’re not acceptable forms of representation or at least not where they need to be, and maybe teach you a little bit about the incredibly vast and colorful differences between Central, South, and Caribbean-American cultures. This is a complicated discussion, but a necessary one. If there's anything I've made that I want people to see the most, it's this video. Right here. Right now. Please enjoy, and thank you for listening.
