Resident Evil 3 (1999) is often ranked up there in my personal top three Resident Evil games, alongside Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil: Remake. A massive fan of the series, I can't tell you how many hours i've put into it. From the S.T.A.R.S team, to the B.S.A.A team, I love the cast and long for the return of a few favourites such as Rebecca Chambers. Resident Evil is my favourite video game universe at this point, and with Remake 2 being so good, I am on the edge of my seat for the next installment. Capcom have done a wonderful job keeping these games fun, even if they don't always stick to the survival horror gameplay. Though, I wish they would as I love my puzzles and fixed camera angled Resident Evil's.
Resident Evil 3 is a little different to the first two Resident Evil games released during this time on the Playstation 1, as this Resi has a new foe introduced, one that puts the fear of all that is holy into your soul; Nemesis. A tall tyrant programmed to remove the surviving S.T.A.R.S members from this Earth as they have learned far too much on the evil Umbrella crop's goals. Barry Burton, Chris Redfield, Brad Vickers, Rebecca Chambers and of course; Jill Valentine all have a target on their backs in the form of Nemesis, and he won't stop until his job is complete!
The world Resident Evil 3 Nemesis presents is one of sorrow, loss, and failure. It's the one game in the series where the bad guys win. Not outright, but Jill Valentine loses everything. Her friends, her job, her town, and fails at her duty to protect those that can't protect themselves. Raccoon City gets wiped out, and all she can do is run away. It's rare for a video game to have such a story, I wish game developers were brave enough to attempt these styles of story telling more often.
Though Nemesis' story is bleak, the gameplay is far from so. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is possibly the smoothest playing Resident Evil game I know of. The quick turn is lightning fast, the run speed has you feeling like a cat, and dodging, when it works, makes the game seem more dynamic than any Resident Evil that has followed. Jill zips through Raccoon City like a bird in the air and it feels amazing. Hopefully my RE3 walkthrough can showcase that.
There's not many Playstation 1 games i'd put on par with Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. For me, this is near the top of the pile for endless replays and constant conversational topics. It's also the last in the Resident Evil series to have a somewhat grounded, serious tone. Before everything went anime with Code Veronica and Zero, before Resident Evil 4 had Leon jumping 30 feet off ladders, and before Wesker became a Matrix fanboy. RE3 is how I picture Resident Evil in my mind, and its this game I wish Capcom tried to mimic for future titles of the survival horror series.
The original 3 PS1 Resi's were peak. From mansions to police stations, to the streets. They told a straight forward story of progression that ended with a big nuke. What better way to end an arc!? The Playstation 1 had a million fantastic games, but the OG Resident Evils outshine them all for me alongside Metal Gear Solid.
While this style of Resident Evil is no more, i'd at least settle for the return of Jill Valentine. Capcom seem to have done away with her, despite constantly shown to be the most popular character of the series years after her last starring role. Jill's personality and character design brought fans in by the millions. From men to women, Jill Valentine is unmatched in her power to win over hearts. She'd be a perfect fit for the return of 3rd Persona Resident Evil.
I hope you enjoy my Resident Evil 3: Nemesis playthrough as much as I did. It's always great to be given the chance to share my passion for Resident Evil with others and to bond over this unforgettable franchise. From the Playstation 1 days to modern times, Resident Evil continues to produce award winning titles despite a few duds along the way. I will be there to play as many new Resi games as I can, and to share them with all of you, too.
