Resident Evil 7: Biohazard - Part 2
Note: This is a full Platinum run
After the franchise had suffered a nosedive at the hands of games like Umbrella Corps and a slurry of awful (but admittedly very funny) Paul WS Anderson movies, Resident Evil 6 left it truly in the toilet. Revelations 2 was an honourable attempt at clawing back, but there was nothing new or standout. Capcom had to make some drastic changes to ensure the future of what was the benchmark for survival horror, and with RE7 they absolutely did that. There were many bold moves that rattled the nerves of seasoned RE players... a first person game set in backwoods Louisiana, not a zombie in sight?!
Capcom took inspiration from movies like Evil Dead and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre as you play Ethan Winters, a man who gets a call out of the blue from his wife Mia, who was presumed dead for three years, telling him that she is alive and well in the parish of Dulvey. On investigation, he is captured by the insane and psychopathic Baker family (each with some unique mutations) - and the game centres around rescuing Mia and his escape from their estate - and this connects to the wider RE universe.
The atmosphere is always creepy, and very tense as you feel that you are constantly being pursued by the inhabitants of the property. You will constantly find yourself on edge as you backtrack and scavenge for what few resources there are, and you have to think about where to use them and what to keep in the returning connected item boxes - this is probably the most defenceless you will ever feel playing a Resident Evil game and it is very much by definition, survival horror in it's purest form. Sound design for the game is fantastic too, ramping up the fear with it's assorted squelches, knocks, house sounds and of course well placed musical cues.
That's not to say that the game is without its flaws. The creatures aside from the Bakers are very repetitive and annoying after a while - and even some of Baker fights can feel unfair or frustrating. Puzzles can also be easy to solve considering objectives are clearly set for the most part unless it's collecting items through exploration. These don't bog down the story and experience too much though, and the pacing is just right for engaging the player and assuring them that there is still a tonne of fuel left in the RE tank.
