The Devil Within: Satgat - Part 4
0Newcore Games is a fledgling studio (as of 2020) made up of experienced developers and is based in Korea. TDW is their first outing in the world of Steam and consoles, and is a solid debut that sees Metroidvania meeting Soulslike. It's set across the kingdom of Joseon and combines feudal Korea with otherwordly and sci-fi elements to form it's four massive stages.
You play as Kim Rip, a royal guard who is thrown into an assault on Blackstone Tower, a spire that has started to corrupt the inhabitants of Joseon and unleash a plague of demons that threatens the population of the entire planet. After the assault goes awry, you awaken with amnesia - as well as powers gifted to you by your demonic arm and a ghostly companion - with no choice but to fight through the stages in order to retrieve your memories and liberate Joseon from said demons.
Combat is a satisfying and fun cross between devil may cry hacking, shooting and slashing, as well as timed dodges and parries in order to build up your special move gauge - and much the same as souls games, the ingram that you harvest can be used in levelling stats and abilities. This is a must as you navigate the levels and their difficulty spikes. Bosses are well designed, and there will be a lot of necessary studying of their movesets and behaviour in order to triumph.
Exploration and backtracking waivers between frustrating and fulfilling as you build your lore collection (which has been painstakingly put together to paint a picture of the universe - if it's your thing) and arsenal or costume rack - though it isn't always easy to figure out where to begin. And whilst it's fun, sometimes there can be downright annoying glitches and overly rough parts. Newcore have impressed me as they very much engage with their audience and take feedback well on Reddit and elsewhere. All in all, this is a very enjoyable game and I would definitely play more.
