Resident Evil 8 Village - Mac Gaming - M1 MacBook Air
46Finally we test Resident Evil: 8 Village on the entry level M1 MacBook Air.
The game is perfectly playable at a resolution of 1080p and capped at 30FPS, with gfx options set at medium.
I found that the system had a hard time reaching for 60fps (at 1080p), delivering in return a poor experience with stuttering and hiccups. The best option was just to limit the frame rate to play smoothly.
System does throttle, which is why gfx options must be lowered and 60fps cannot be met. In order to keep temperatures at a more stable and safer zone, 1080p30fps med is the ideal.
As a reminder this is the entry level 2020 M1 MacBook Air. The M1 inside has the weakest SoC, with only 7 GPU cores. This was specific to the base model 256GB SSD & 8GB RAM MacBook Air. In addition it has no active cooling, therefore it will throttle, leading the entire SoC to become underpowered.
Despite all of the inherent limitations of the M1 MacBook Air, it handles the game like a champ, reaching a smooth and stable experience at 1080p 30fps. Very similar to what we used to see in consoles such as the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox One S.
