"Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" (2021) written and directed by Johannes Roberts is admittedly pretty terrible but as a fan of the game series it does it's name justice and was incredibly faithful. In my opinion this film is only possible to enjoy if you have played and completed the first two Resident Evil video games.

The film mashes together the first two plots of the first two video games in the series, and they happen simultaneously with a few changes. Claire Redfield (Kaya Scodelario) goes back to her dreaded hometown of Raccoon City in search of her brother Chris Redfield (Robbie Amell). Rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy (Avan Jogia) starts his first day at the R.P.D. which has been attacked by zombies. Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen) accompanies her team to the Spencer Mansion in search of some missing team members, discovering the atrocities committed by the evil Umbrella Corporation along the way.

I'm being dead serious and completely honest with you when I say I actually enjoyed Welcome to Raccoon City quite a bit. The reason I liked it so much is because it is shockingly accurate and faithful to the games. The people who made this are clearly aware fans that know even the smallest of details, like Chris' innate ability to headshot more frequently than others, and Chris beginning the game with a lighter. When you get to the primary sets and locations of the film, I guaranteed you will be blown away if you have played the first two games, because these are scarily accurate to the point where it felt like I was actually in the game because I knew everywhere they were going and everything around them at all times.

Where the film fails is being a cheesy zombie movie for casual audiences. If you haven't played the games there is absolutely nothing here for you and I wouldn't even bother. The acting is some of the worst I've ever seen in any movie ever personally, and many iconic characters were portrayed unforgivably bad like Leon & Wesker (Tom Hopper). The funniest part about the movie is that the actor who portrays Ada Wong (Lily Gao) is actually the only genuine Resident Evil video game voice actor in the entire cast, but the reason that's funny is because she is notorious for being the weakest and most disliked actor in the entire game series franchise.

Welcome to Raccoon City is an incredibly faithful and well put together video game fan pleaser, but it is an absolute trash casual watch for any non fan. If you were to turn this one and have this be your first introduction to the Resident Evil lore and universe, I highly doubt you would be coming back, and I wouldn't blame you.
