Retro and Reminisce // Contra on the NES, AKA The BEST Version // 2 of 4 Deathless Runs!!
0Continuing with Konami Games, starting the week off with THE essential Nintendo NES Entry of Contra felt perfect.
While the Arcade iteration of Contra is "technically" the best, the Nintendo NES Conversion is truly the best as far as Gameplay goes. Everything feels tighter, far more responsive, and far more refined than the Arcade Version. I'd rather have a better playing iteration, no??
I also always intend to go Deathless/Flawless each time I play through Contra. Today, that is achieved out of my first and fourth attempt. Attempt 02 had me messing up my timing in the Energy Zone's Flame Section, where you get the Blaster Power-Up, and Attempt 04 had the D-Pad falter in the Hangar, along with me hitting a Scorpion on the Final Boss. Overall, not too shabby...
Closing this out, I'd like to point out that this is a Fan Translated Version of Contra's Import, Gryzor. Import NES Cartridges had additional Mapper Chips on their respective Boards that allowed for extra Graphical Flourishes and Effects; like the Between-Stage Cutscenes and Map Screens, along with scrolling Snow Squalls in the Snow Field Stage and rustling Tree Canopies in the Jungle. Nintendo made concessions and cut costs for Releases here in the States.
