Retro Game Review 7: Planet X3
Over a year back I backed a Kickstarter for a new MS-DOS game. Yes, there are new games made for old PCs in 2019. The game is "Planet X3" by The 8bitguy, aka David Murray. It's a real time strategy game for all PCs, starting with the original IBM 5150 -- given at least 256 KiB of memory and a colour graphics card.
The game comes on one diskette with a nice big box and manuals as well as a cassette tape with the sound track. It supports CGA, Tandy and VGA (MCGA to be precise) graphics modes. Music is done via PC speaker, Adlib or Tandy. Effects are PC speaker only.
You control individual units such as builders and tanks and you have to destroy all enemy bases in each level. To do this you have to collect natural resources: minerals, gas and solar power. This lets you build factories, missile silos and tanks.
It is very nice and impressive that we get such nicely made games for historic computer platforms. Make sure to also check out David's videos on Planet X3 and other retro topic, because they are very educational.
