Return of the Obra Dinn #1 - Adventures in Parapsychology & Claims Adjustment
In 1803, the East India merchant vessel Obra Dinn departed England for the Orient with sixty souls aboard, and never made its rendezvous at the Cape of Good Hope. It was believed lost at sea with all hands, until 1807, when it returned to Falmouth harbor with no crew aboard. And who's going to let a lack of witnesses get in the way of a proper insurance investigation?
Return of the Obra Dinn is a 2018 indie game by developer Lucas Pope, most famous for his prior game, Papers, Please, and who seems to specialize in turning excruciatingly dull-sounding premises into compelling games with captivating stories. It is a mystery game where one must discover the fate of all sixty people aboard the ship.
(I played this part of the game in a party setting with a couple friends, and the audio is a little janky as a result. There may be varying levels, inaudible parts, sudden volume spikes, and other weirdness. If we carry on with it in future sessions, hopefully we'll sort them out and create a more natural commentary track.)
