What is The Sword of Lxsor? Nearly four years ago I uploaded a video asking the same question, and while some of the details may never be known, the ongoing search has uncovered some clues that let us know most of the story. Simply put, it is a collection of tracks for the Sharp X68000 whose composer goes by the alias of CUL.CAN (or sometimes Karu-chan). The tracks were composed while CUL.CAN was working with the doujin group TUT CClub (Toyohashi University of Technology Computer Club) in the mid to late 90s. After their time with TUT CClub, it seems that CUL.CAN gave up their pursuit of music composition entirely and dropped off the radar, having no presence thereafter in the gaming scene. Who is CUL.CAN? Where are they now? Nobody really knows. There is very little information about them, even in Japanese circles, but it's likely that's the way CUL.CAN wants to keep it. Ok, but where is the game that goes with the music? It was either cancelled or never existed in the first place. Some speculate that it may have been intended as a standalone album, but given CUL.CAN's role in the doujin group at the time, it seems rather unlikely. In any event, listening to the classic FM sounds of The Sword of Lxsor unmistakably conjures images of the golden age of Japanese computer games: the glow of CRT displays, home ports of classic arcade games, floppy drives, LEDs, buttons, knobs, switches, and plugs. It makes one imagine what would be happening on-screen during each of its tracks. Is it meant to accompany images of a lone starship blasting through alien enemies in a foreign galaxy? Or perhaps the sword in the title refers to an artifact of fantasy legend in some sort of JRPG epic. It begs the listener to find the answer, and some still maintain a hope that the game that was meant to go with the music will someday surface on some remote corner of the internet. As for myself, I think that not knowing is part of what allows my imagination to run free with each listening, and imagining the game it could have been is a big part of what makes it so good.

What is Return to Lxsor? It is a compiliation of The Sword of Lxsor and other tracks composed by CUL.CAN that have been carefully sourced and edited with the intention of offering the best listening experience possible. My first upload of this soundtrack was mostly just a mirror of an already existing upload to give The Sword of Lxsor a presence on YouTube in its entirety. Recently, I did a bit of digging and found the original MDX files for not just The Sword of Lxsor, but a handful of other tracks by CUL.CAN. While the sound quality of the other upload is largely good, I used this opportunity to create a more consistent, lossless "remastered" version of the soundtrack and decided to wrap it in the form of an album. I have taken the liberty of naming the tracks in The Sword of Lxsor that I couldn't find the names for and even made an album cover to give the soundtrack a more complete feel. So, whether it's your first time listening, or you're back for more, I hope you enjoy my personal effort in creating a definitive version of this amazing soundtrack.
