Digimon World; A playstation 1 game made to help sell toys, colouring books, get kids to watch the anime and sell even more games. A product created to move a franchise forward that likely had little passion in its creation.
Yet, Digimon World has more heart, atmosphere and intimacy than many of the big AAA games of today. Raising little Rookie Digimon to become the ultimate fighter destined to save File Island and the entire Digiworld from decay; it's your mission as the little protagonist to do away with the evil pledging the minds of innocent creatures everywhere.
Not nearly as popular as Pokemon, but far more of a challenge with greater depth; Digimon World tests your skills as a gamer and pushes you to do better. Digimon World is a game where you'll have to pay constant attention to every detail, a task that can be pretty stressful at times.
If you misstep in the slightest way, it could send you on a path of regret. The death of your Digimon coming too soon, or the feeling of failure striking your heart when your rookie becomes the unintended champion Digimon you'd have hoped. A road every new player to Digimon World will walk.
With 65 Digimon in the game, a shallow, but perfect plot, and a beautiful world to travel, explore and lose yourself in; this little budget game is truly a one in one million.
Digimon World should have failed out the gate, it has no right to be this good... but yet, it does what many titles today fail to you; win the players time, and win a place in the players memories.
All for the right reasons, too. Unlike Metal Gear Solid V... PFFT
The Playstation 1 had a grand line up of JRPGs, RPGs, and Action games that blow Digimon World out of the water, but that's not the point. Games like Final Fantasy Vii were designed to do that. Nobody would dare compare Digimon World to games like that or Vagrant Story.
However, it's impressive that this title managed to reach the high quality it has. Of course a deeper story, granding soundtrack, more detailed character models and an even more powerful art direction would have been the dream of every Digimon fan, but that will never happen.
Not for Digimon, not for Monster Rancher, or Beyblade or any anime you love made to sell toys to kids.
Franchises where the tie ins are insanely good are rare even for legends like Dragon Ball that has at best a handful of decent titles.
This is a game that had everything set against it, but somehow came out proving its worth. Digimon World; in my opinion, is far greater than any tie in.
I'm open minded to finding the Digimon World replacement someday. I've been looking, but so far i've yet to find a game that replaces this diamond. Maybe someday it'll get a real remake that focuses on recreating the atmosphere and magical sense the original has, or maybe Digimon World will get a cool port to later consoles and PC... it's a dream i'm not sure will happen.
I mean, the PS1 has so many classics that still have yet to make their way to other consoles, so the chances of this little train that could doing it is silm to none.
I'll be keeping my original copy of Digimon World as long as life allows me to. Not sure how often i'll be able to replay this time consuming masterpiece, but i'll always have a spot for it in my heart.
Hope this video gives those that have yet to play Digimon World some interest in finding a copy. If you like games like Pokemon, not for your love of the characters, but for the monster raising aspect, then Digimon World will suit you to a tee. Just be ready for some major booty kicking the game will send your way.
