Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio knows how to prioritize and save money on things that aren't too important: that's how it manages to release a new Yakuza game about once a year despite the fact that each game has enough content for dozens of hours. Mechanics, mini-games, even setting change from one part to another - but thanks to the new characters and stories the series doesn't get bored. And recently it has even dared to bold experiments: from the seventh part the main Yakuza game line became a turn-based JRPG, and the usual slaughter remained in the spin-off Judgment, dedicated to the investigation of a private detective. The new game, Lost Judgment, traditionally cuts corners by combining the mechanics of the first Judgment and the setting of last year's Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
Kindergarten cop.
Takayuki Yagami is a former lawyer and now a private detective working in Kamuro-teo, a trendy Tokyo neighborhood. He is also given an opportunity to visit Yokohama, an old acquaintance of his, who has opened his own detective agency. However, we are not talking about something big like serial murders, but about a simple school bullying.
Meanwhile, Yagami's former colleagues on the bench predictably lose their case in court. Their client, policeman Ehara, was caught molesting a woman on the subway, and all the evidence points to his guilt. But as soon as he is convicted, Ehara challenges the justice system by naming a murder victim, who has just been discovered in Yokohama and hasn't even been identified yet. The investigation reveals that the crime took place exactly the same morning the defendant was arrested in the Tokyo subway - that is, the conviction was his alibi. But he also had a motive: the murdered young man had driven Ehara's son to suicide during his school years. Besides, they went to the same school where Yagami deals with the problem of bullying. Time for the detective to roll up his sleeves!
Master of all hands and feet
Of course, you still have to wave your limbs, but the scuffle here and not too difficult (at least on normal difficulty), and often pulled to the ears. Yagami either gets into physical violence by simply not getting along with his interlocutor, or he beats up a dozen schoolchildren right in the classroom, and every time it goes without much consequences, as if it's the custom in Japan to greet each other with the soles of his feet in the face.
Nevertheless, fighting is still very enjoyable. Yagami now has three fighting styles: "tiger" with powerful punches that penetrate the block, "crane" with sweeping attacks, and "snake" with graceful parries. Unlike the brutal Kazuma Kiryu from the old Yakuza installments, Yagami relies on dexterity rather than strength in combat, making even simple combos turn into spectacular pirouettes.

The Verdict
Lost Judgment is exactly the sequel to the crime detective we've been waiting for the year before last. The sequel smoothed out some of the rough edges of the original and kept some, but it succeeded and surpassed expectations in the story - something we wait for new games from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio every year.
