REVIEW | Playmates Toys Toho Classic Series: Godzilla VS. SpaceGodzilla (1994) SpaceGodzilla
The 1994 film, "Godzilla VS. SpaceGodzilla" brought back some classic monsters, like Mothra (as a cameo) & M.O.G.E.U.R.A. But it also brought in an all new adversary for Godzilla to face, in the form of SpaceGodzilla! Born of a mixture of Godzilla cells & a black hole, SpaceGodzilla is an evil clone of Godzilla, hellbent on destroying any and all life forms on the planet, including Godzilla himself. He's bigger, meaner, and debate-ably smarter too, going as far to kidnap Little Godzilla in the act.
Originally making his debut in 2019 along side Godzilla (2016), Destoroyah, & Gigan (2004), this SpaceGodzilla figure was part of the first wave of Playmates Toys' first go at the Godzilla license, and the outcome was not so sweet. The figures were very low in plastic quality and had such a huge rush job, even going as far to take the molds of pre-existing figures from past toy brands like NECA & Bandai.
SpaceGodzilla took the mold from the old MMS Bandai SpaceGodzilla figure, and modified it by giving it a new plastic & rubber exterior & new, yet iffy paint. But despite its hardships, will this be the shining example of a great figure and glimmer of hope for the original wave of Godzilla & Kong figures from Playmates? Or will this figure make me want to walk out of it at first glance like Godzilla composer Akira Ifukube did when he read the film's script? Find out in the review!
