Super Mario USA is the Japanese version of North America and Europe's Super Mario Bros. 2. Japan's version of Super Mario Bros. 2 (often referred to as Super Mario Bros. 2J or SMB: The Lost Levels) was deemed to difficult of audiences outside of Japan, so instead they took an existing game called Doki Doki Panic and changed the graphics so that it looked more like a Super Mario game. Years later, the North America and European version of SMB2 was released in Japan as Super Mario USA.

Despite the fact that it was never intended to be a Super Mario Bros. game, it's amazing just how many things from this game have influenced and appeared in the rest of the series. Shy Guys, Snifits, Pokeys, Sparkys, Birdo, and many other now iconic enemies made their first appearance in this game. Peach's ability to float after jumping is also something that was introduced here, and don't forget about throw-able vegetables which would appear again in Super Mario Advance 4.

Even though this game strays from the rest of the series, that doesn't mean it still isn't really fun to play. It's kind of funny just how many sequels on the NES were much different from the original games, such as how The Legend of Zelda 2: Adventure of Link which was a side scrolling platformer rather than an overhead adventure game.

In this video we play through the first three worlds of the game, and I point out many secrets and notable facts along the way. For the most part things will be almost identical to the North American and PAL versions of Super Mario Bros., although you can expect to see some differences!
