Ridge Racer DS - Virtual Garage - All Car Showcase
I hope you are all healthy & safe wherever you are in the World right now and whatever challenges you are facing.
Growing up in the arcades of the late 80's and early 90's was magical. Every week a new machine but it was the rivalry between Sega and Namco that really took it to the next level. While Sega made a number of my all time favourite games for both the arcade and the home consoles I was also a huge fan of many of Namco's stellar titles.
While my preference was always the blue skies of Sega and in particular the handling models of Daytona USA, Sega Rally & Scud Race/Sega GT I also spent a lot of time with Namco's Ridge Racer series, including one memorable evening in a pub in Teddington that had the awesome Rave Racer.
Anyway naturally one of the first games I got for my DS was Ridge Racer DS. I'd rinsed the N64 game and the chance to play on a portable was too goo to pass up.
This video is a quick "virtual garage showcase" letting you see the 28 cars avaialble in the game. You start with 4 cars, win a 3 race Grand Prix and then get to go head to head in a one-on-one race against each new car - beat them and you unlock them. While the vehicles are essentially the same as the N64 game they've given them a paint job - often tying them into a Nintendo character such as Peach, Mario, Luigi or Donkey Kong. You also unlock two new music tracks - Mushroom Kingdom and an amazing mash-up of Galaga and Pacman. I'll perhaps make a video of these if anyone is interested.
This is recorded directly from the screen of my DS Lite (slightly brighter screen than my original chunky DS). Capturing DS games from original hardware is frankly a right pain :-)
