Recently, I decided to repurpose a side project of mine I started in 2019. Not only will I revisit my oldest covers from 2016 and 2017, but I'll also revisit any cover I did between 2018 and 2020, because I found stuff between those years I could improve upon. I decided to revisit my cover of this song I previously did in 2020. It was suggested to me a while back since Furnace fully supports the YM2413 compared to MaxiTracker. Though I could've done clever tricks with patch-switching, I decided to switch the FM chip to the Y8950 to give myself a bit more flexibility with the FM patches. The Y8950 is a 2OP FM chip from Yamaha. It's essentially a YM3526/OPL (which I used once before) with a built-in ADPCM channel. This chip was used the MSX-Audio expansion cart and in the SNK Triple Z80 arcade system. The ADPCM channel allowed me to use the samples from the original song. While having 9 FM channels allowed me to add in the stuff I had to sacrifice in my MaxiTracker cover of the song, because of the lack of SSG-EG and a more limited LFO on the FM chip, I still improvised some stuff on the FM patches; one of the patches uses a macro setting, and some parts I used two channels to simulate a "4OP" mode, not to mention the challenge in working with a 2OP FM chip that only uses sine waves. In any case, I like how this one came out.
