Let's "write the novel that Tolkien never did", they claim. Or how about,
"we have to appeal to a huge audience in order to justify the existence of our adaptation".
When you look at shows where the showrunners work WITH the authors, such as Game of Thrones with G.R.R. Martin, Sandman with Neil Gaiman, the Harry Potter films, or ANY Steven King series or film, you'll see adaptations that stick close to the source material and are better for it.
But in the case of Rings of Power and Wheel of Time, you have showrunners adapting works by authors who have been long dead: Robert Jordan and J.R.R. Tolkien. And if you aren't going to respect those authors and their original intent in their writings...if you think you have to modernize and update because you find parts of the text to be "problematic" or not "inclusive" enough....are you ACTUALLY the right person for the job?
