Rings of Power RANT - Amazon's Script Writing DEBACLE
463Renfail the Bearded Dwarven Princess here with the latest Rings of Power rant as we dive into the debacle that is the script writing on Amazon's Lord of the Rings show. It's frantic, rushed, and universally mocked by media outlets yet the showrunners are supposedly amazing script doctors. What gives?
Part of the heart the issue lies with the frantic pacing. Where JD Payne and Patrick McKay claim to have come up with the ENTIRE plot for Rings of Power in a single marathon script writing session, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens took nearly three MONTHS to craft their first draft, then refined that over 14 months, and again when the original two films were broken into three.
Everything about the Rings of Power production feels as though it has been ran through the "rapid dry" processing unit, specifically designed to be produced as quickly as possible to exploit the Middle Earth intellectual property within a specific time frame. Where Peter Jackson had time to breathe, and made sure that the Lord of the Rings was brough to light in a respectful way, JD Payne and Patrick McKay seem hellbent on "writing the novel Tolkien never did" and bringing their own version of Middle Earth to the screen.
