Some extremely difficult games make you want to put your hand in a blender, some make you want to come back again and again even as you hurl verbal abuse at the screen; River City Ransom is an example of the latter. I find it hard to explain why the fisticuffs work so well, especially since the attacks are limited by the NES controller, but they are a blast. And a score of available weapons (including trash cans) spice the combat up as well. And speaking of spice, defeat enough baddies and can stop off for some sushi to power yourself up. There's no real story behind the game, but who needs one with action this good? 8/10 stars
