Robocop: Rogue City - Part 3
0Robocop is my all time favourite film. Verhoeven's satirical black comedy/sci fi look at resurrection/Reagan America is a landmark in cinema. Let's be completely honest here though, not since Data East's Robocop or Robocop vs Terminator has there been a film-worthy game. In all honesty, I was going to sleep on this until I saw that Peter Weller was involved and the first bit of promising gameplay worked its way around youtube.
Rogue City is a labour of love - with more nods to the original than I anticipated. They range from on the nose references (Magna Volt, Sunblock 3000, finding a 6000 SUX parked up, fighting an ED-209) to obscure (The antagonist being melting man Emil's brother, the SHELL turned HELL petrol station and the cobra assault rifle making an appearance). The gameplay is sluggish, but not unplayable - and is the only realistic way to capture Robo's movements and the fact that he is essentially a walking tank - however the fun ways of despatching perps makes it not only fun, but downright hilarious. This is especially true when the first movies iconic score kicks in. The story is as good as it could be, taking place between Robocop 2 and 3 and nails the tone of the second film at least - in humour and satire.
That's not to say that it's perfect, with noticeable glitches littered through the AA title. The exploration ranges from engaging to tedious - and the difference between action and slow paced story is very noticeable, and no amount of true-to-film aesthetic can change that. So all in all, this game was the right length. It won't be a 10/10 for the casual gamer with no knowledge of the original films by a long shot, but there was enough there for me. Whilst it isn't a title I'll revisit anytime soon - I enjoyed my time with it, and would recommend to likeminded folk once it goes on sale. At least it ain't Robocop 3!
