Utterly, utterly stunning - Spider-Man 2 not only equals the original, but improves upon it in every conceivable way. The narrative (with a key theme being redemption) draws on the previous game's open threads, whilst introducing a new pair of antagonists in Kraven The Hunter and fan favourite Venom who add to the trouble of Miles and Peter trying to navigate difficulties in their lives and personal relationships.


There is a tonne of respect given to the source material, whillst Insomniac carve out their own story. Every scene carries the production value of cinema, with the acting on point - the soundtrack in certain points is definitely something to shout about. Gameplay wise, the combat is fun, fluid and precise - and with the addition of new abilities and button schemes you have to be quick-thinking in order to tailor your fight to the enemy (especially late game). Swinging through new york is even more fun, with gliding and surfing mechanics, coupled with wing tunnels - you rarely want to fast travel, much the same as the original. Graphically it is incredible, with no pop-in builidings or fuzzy load ins. It's all there, good to go. That SSD is really paying off!


Still, nothing's perfect. Whilst the side quests are better than previous games in the franchise, there are still some which are tedious and repetetive - and for that reason (as well as a couple of glitches to be patched) we've not reached the perfect 10. I disagree with some other reviews however.... the 100% length of around 30 hours or so is not a problem when you know you'll visit it again and again. This is a case of undeniable quality over quantity.
