Our world is host to a multitude of subterranean environments of essential importance. Underground mines offer valuable resources serving the needs of our modern societies. Urban subterranean infrastructure such as the subway system of metropolitan areas offer critical services. Cave networks are of paramount scientific interest and represent unique ecosystems. Rarely discussed and often partially understood, subterranean environments are simultaneously extremely valuable but also potentially hazardous for human workers, explorers, or search and rescue personnel.

Responding to this challenge, in this session we investigate the potential of autonomous robotic exploration and search in underground settings. Motivated by the organization of the DARPA Subterranean Challenge we discuss the current state of the art, the remaining scientific challenges, and assess the applications and limitations of such technologies. Accordingly, we strive to identify the most impactful application domains such that autonomous subterranean robots serve the needs for enhanced safety during underground operations, rapid search-and-rescue in gruelling subterranean conditions, and versatile scientific tools to explore the partially understood depths of our planet or even the lava tubes of other planets.

What is AI for Good?
The AI for Good series is the leading action-oriented, global & inclusive United Nations platform on AI. The Summit is organized all year, always online, in Geneva by the ITU with XPRIZE Foundation in partnership with over 35 sister United Nations agencies, Switzerland and ACM. The goal is to identify practical applications of AI and scale those solutions for global impact.
