Rocket Knight Adventures (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
924A playthrough of Konami's 1993 platform game for the Sega Genesis, Rocket Knight Adventures.
Played through on hard mode. And since it's a Konami game, you know just how accurate that label is. That being said, it is just as satisfying as it is difficult.
Rocket Knight Adventures was a game that Konami produced during the period where it started heavily developing for the Sega Genesis console. It was a brand-new IP that, like so many other companies were trying to do at the time, was attempting to establish a franchise on an "animal mascot" after the amazing success Sega had with Sonic.
And while Sparkster, our opossum hero, never was the runaway cash-printing machine that Konami doubtlessly intended him to be, he starred in three phenomenally good (and criminally underrated) 16-bit platformers. He dusted the likes of Bubsy, Awesome Possum, Aero, Zero, and just about any other.
It's clear how much was invested in this game. The graphics and sound were top-notch for the Genesis, it was just as fast as Sonic and rarely suffered slowdown or sprite break-up, the controls were excellent, and the varied level designs kept it feeling fresh right through the to the finale. Bloodlines and Hyperstone Heist have nothing on this game!
Sparkster's main "thing " was his jetpack. He could use it to fling himself into enemies for heavy damage, to launch himself across chasms that otherwise couldn't be crossed, and my favorite - he could launch himself into walls to ricochet back and forth, almost like a wall-jump, but much faster and cooler.
The stages span a few different genres - you have standard platform stages, shoot 'em up areas, and quite a few that sit somewhere in-between. RKA's designers really went all-out to prevent it from feeling stale.
It had a direct sequel (Sparkster on the Genesis), a spin-off (my favorite game in the series, Sparkster in the SNES), as well as a final "throwback" sequel to the Genesis Sparkster, Rocket Knight, released on the PS3/Xbox 360 back in the late 2000s.
So, while Sparkster never became a household name like Sonic did, his games were just as good. Rocket Knight Adventures is a classic, and doesn't deserve to be forgotten.
