Captain America and the Avengers (Game Boy) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Mindscape's 1993 license-based beat 'em up for the Nintendo Game Boy, Captain America and the Avengers.
Played through as Vision on the "Challenge" difficulty level for the best ending.
The Game Boy version of Captain America and the Avengers was the final release for the home ports of the iconic 1991 arcade hit, and I've got to say, I was pleasantly surprised by how solid of an offering it was. Of course it lacks colors, any voice samples, and there are few enemies on screen at once, but it plays surprisingly well.
It was handled by the same developer that was responsible for the SNES title, and though it seems quite unlikely, I actually think this one plays better than the SNES port. Since the playfield is now a flat 2D plane instead of the 2.5D perspective used by just about ever beat 'em up ever, lining up your shots with enemies is far less frustrating here than it was in the SNES game. The simplified control scheme also makes reliably pulling off all of the moves a much easier task.
All of the original stages and bosses are here, and though some of them have been changed a bit to cater to the GB hardware, it makes a nice change to have the entire game brought over instead of the usual arcade/console-handheld conversions that tended axe a great deal of the original content.
The graphics are surprisingly good for an arcade port, and that the music holds up and is still recognizable was also a pretty pleasant surprise.
There are definitely better beat 'em ups for the Game Boy (Double Dragon, Battletoads, etc), but this one is nowhere near the trainwreck that you might have expected it to be! It's actually pretty fun!
*Note: This was played using the Gambatte core in Retroarch, and the Game Boy screen look was achieved by using the DMG shader.
