Rocket Raccoon has been through so much during his time in the MCU. He saved the galaxy twice with his make-shift family, but then had to live for five years knowing they were all turned to dust. That seems like a heavy burden for anyone to bear. Here was a character who spent all of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 learning that he doesn’t have to push these people away and could actually embrace them as his own family, but then had all that ripped away from him.

And even though that’s heartbreaking, could Rocket have suffered even worse tragedies in his past? Because we still don’t know for sure where Rocket came from or how he came to be what he is, and that’s going to be a question that hopefully gets answered in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But will they keep his tragic comic origins? Originally, Rocket comes from a planet called Halfworld, where malfunctioning robots genetically engineered animals to take care of the people living on the planet because the robots didn’t want to. This led to a whole host of problems and eventually we got Rocket Raccoon as sheriff alongside his trusty partner Wal Russ. I’m not even kidding! But just how could James Gunn use Rocket’s comic backstory and tie that into Rocket’s MCU story? Well we have some ideas!
