In this episode of Rookie Reviews we take a look at Blacksad: Under the Skin, a 3D Detective-Noir adventure game developed by Pendulo Studios.
It is Blacksad's first outing outside the comic books and it serves as a good introduction to his universe. Unfortunately, Pendulo tried to emulate the gameplay and visual presentation from Telltale's titles with mixed success.
Outside of conversations and QTEs, Blacksad controls like a survivor from early PS1 horror games (Resident Evil, Silent Hill) and looks like an unholly mixture of rubber and skin. You're limited to keyboard only control which leads to a lot of frustrating situations if your interactions with the game world have to be pixel perfect.
Pendulo put a lot of effort into writing but not into gameplay and the game suffers for it. Most of your choices will affect the story but not to the degree you would expect. If the script says someone needs to die, they die no matter what you do. Your only choice is A: Try to stop it and get killed. or B: Do nothing and move on.
The music, voice acting and audio effects are phenomenal but the animation quality brings the whole expirience down a bit. The only flattering thing about the animation quality is the pure comedic value of visual bugs that occur frequently and wooden expresions on the character's faces.
