In this episode of Rookie Reviews we take a look at Devil Spire, a newly released dungeon crawler developed by Ithiro Sumi, Lucas Perdomo, Lucas Bressan. It started as a passion project between friends and it soon evolved into something magnificent.
The game is an omage to the old-school FPS and dungeon crawling games and it does a great job of challenging the players skills and reactions. Every run is randomized so the tension and difficulty never disappear.
The First-Person Melee combat can be difficult to pull off but this game keeps thing simple and effective. Every swing of the axe/sword, every bullet/arrow shot sounds and looks impactful. Magic spells and power-ups are fun to use and affect the game well enough so don't get the feeling of over-empowerment.
Enemies vary in shapes and sizes and attack patterns, which is good but they could some rebalancing when it comes to movement speed and lunge animations. It's hard to tell if the melee attacker will remain stationary or if he/she/it will lunge forward.
It's a shame that the game doesn't have a Multiplayer option because playing this with friends would be a blast.
But all in all, a great expirience for anyone who love Dark Fantasy & Dungeon Crawling games.
