Control groups are a superior way to control user defined units, squads, and buildings in almost every RTS game. Similar to how custom keybinds limit the time it takes to issue commands, Control groups allow you to select task forces, scouts, and queue barracks to build units or ungrades without moving the mouse or map. This allows you to keep micrmanage your troops without diverting your attention, increasing your APM, but also freeing up your attention to attend to the battlefield.

I somewhat feel that APM is not a great way to measure a player's ability, or at least easily fooled by players clicking the mouse multiple times, issuing the same command, in order to artificially raise APM rates, but that is a different video.
