Continuing on my quick review/survey of representations of the Normandy invasion/campaign in the real time strategy game genre, I played a match from Eugen's 2010 original masterpiece, RUSE. The legendary "Normandy" map, which had to be downloaded to be used, and cannot be gotten by those who purchased the title after Ubisoft closed the RUSE servers over half a decade ago.
RUSE is the first Eugen title to use the famed "IrisZoom", and even though the game is over a decade old now, it's still a beauty to behold. This is a simple 1v1 skirmish against the regular-hard AI. I will add chapters later, to navigate the match. I may actually release a separate version of this video with commentary and some discussion of "strategy" for the match.
Looking at a broad vantage, we see Eugen has always encoded certain "strategic" and "tactical" ideas into their gameplay, including the value of forest/foliage as a 'strong point' for infantry, providing cover, keeping armor away from urban environments, and the correct deployment of "combined arms" to achieve victory. These motifs echo in each game Eugen creates, from RUSE, to Wargame, Steel Division, and now Warno.
RUSE in particular is unique among the family of Eugen titles, as it is a traditional "base building" RTS (though with it's own unique flair), and it includes the notion of "super powers" in the form of RUSE which modify several facets of the game, from line of sight, unit behavior, and the ability to actually trick your adversary with trickery, including fake units (the so-called strategic 'ruse'). If you can get your hands on it, this game is well worth the try. I and some friends may post some match videos on here, with commentary in the near future. We'll try to stretch the engine's capability, which like all games built from IrisZoom, is pretty expansive (providing some truly epic scale battles).
