It seems like the ruins are a one time use upgrade for a dupe that adds an attribute. The one Ada got decreases her stress 20% per cycle. I don't think you can remove the ruins so you gotta build around them. They are telling a back story about why the dupes are inside this asteroid.
The ore scrubber seems to work fairly well but seems slow. It needs no direct power but does require a supply of chlorine gas. It works like a spinning barrel with the ore put inside.
Food is not yet an issue as mealwood is supplying the colony fairly well.
