Back in 2009, Gosling and his friend Zach Shields formed a band called Dead Man’s Bones, blending spooky themes with a sound best described as Halloween folk rock meets eerie children’s choir. The result? A hauntingly beautiful debut album that still has a cult following.
Their inspiration came from an unlikely place: Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion ride. When Gosling and Shields met in 2005, they discovered they were both obsessed with ghosts. Shields was so fascinated as a kid, he was put into therapy. Gosling’s story? His family had to move out of their house because they believed it was haunted.
Naturally, the duo began writing love songs about ghosts, graveyards, and monsters—and thus, Dead Man’s Bones was born.
