Great Scott! 'Back to the Future Part II' Was More Accurate Than You Think

Released in 1989, Back to the Future Part II took a wild leap into the future—specifically, to the year 2015. While not every prediction came true (we're still waiting on flying cars), some of the film’s visions of the future were surprisingly spot-on.

Take Doc Brown’s smartwatch, for example. In one scene, he checks his futuristic watch to tell Marty and Jennifer exactly when the rain will stop—something eerily similar to how we now use weather apps on our Apple Watches or Fitbits.

Then there’s video calling. As Jennifer hides in a closet, she watches her future husband chat with his boss via a large-screen video call—essentially FaceTime before FaceTime. And let’s not forget the VR headsets. In a scene that looks shockingly familiar today, Marty Jr. and another character (also played by Michael J. Fox in drag) are wearing sleek, personal virtual reality goggles—just like the ones we use now for gaming and entertainment.

So no, we don’t have hoverboards that actually hover or skyways filled with flying cars. But when it comes to wearable tech and communication, Back to the Future Part II definitely saw it coming.
